Luke 23, a note in my Bible said that Jesus was tried 6 times by both Jewish and Roman authorities but none of them found him guilty. And yet the mob still convinced Pilate to hand him over to be crucified. It also struck home to me that we can read this over quickly yet Jesus hung on the cross for many hours enduring the pain, rejection and insults of those around him and of his recorded words here they were of grace to the criminal hanging beside him.
I really like vs. 32 in chapter 24. "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" I pray that my heart continues to burn as I encounter Jesus each and every day.
Hit me right between the eyes when I read in Acts 3 Peter's response to the beggar "but what I have I give you." vs. 6. Again a reminder that everything Jesus has done for me is so that I can give it away.
Acts 1:26 is interesting for me in that a new (replacement)disciple is chosen by the casting of lots. We have a different process in our church today but I don't know if I can imagine if we would hire or choose our leadership this way. The process was fourfold: they spelled out criteria (the person was to have been a direct witness of Jesus), they chose two possible people, they prayed for God to show them who should be chosen, then they cast lots. There might still be churches that use a process of casting lots. I think this requires a lot of faith. Don
Pastor Pete's second comment reminds me of an interesting concept I once heard. Many things that we possess become smaller or get less if we give them to others. If I have $20 and give half away, I only have 10 left. However, love is different. If I show love to others, I don't have less love left over for someone else. In fact, I may be richer for it. Don
I find the account of the early church fascinating, including the very clear understanding at this point of the prophecies fulfilled in Jesus. The new believers were moved to awe and joy as they realized that Jesus was the Messiah they had been waiting for. May their response be mine as well.
Let's remember to keep praying for each other as we have finished one month and a book... as the new semester has started, I have been finding it harder to keep reading. This semester is much harder for me and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. So this is my prayer request, I haven't missed a day yet but I feel it pressing against me. I hope you all are doing well and enjoying this small group as we are worshiping and learning together. *Tiff
One thing I found interesting is that in Acts 1, it talks about Jesus' mother and brothers got together with the disciples to join in prayer. I have never really thought about Jesus having brothers before. This reminds me how human Jesus was. everyone thinks of Jesus as this all powerful mighty big God and he is but he also had a human side to him. He probably played hotwheels (or some other form of cars) with his brothers. I thought that was neat.
On Sundays we are to either catch up, take a break, or contemplate on the message. I contemplated on the message yesterday. Darryl's message was inspiring as I tend to be a worrier. Also, is my mind so full of things rushing around, that I have no room for peace? When I do financial books for several different places and it's year end and there's LOTS to think about, how do I clear my mind for peace? Wannetta P.S. I'm with Tiff....it was hard this past week to keep up with the readings, and not to see it as another chore I have to do.

ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say that I have really been enjoying this Bible reading/small group. It has opened my heart to so many things.
