While reading Acts 4, I am amazed at the boldness of the disciples who just a short while earlier had been with Jesus and demonstrated timidity and fear of the religious leadership. The boldness they now display in preaching the gospel openly does not stop with their message to the people; it continues even when they are brought before the council and told to cease preaching. At this point one might think they would tone it down somewhat so as not to "tick them off". However, Peter uses aggressive language like "you crucified" him, and "do you think we should obey you rather than God?" He seems to have no fear of what they will think of him or do to him. What an example for us! Don
In Luke 5, the apostles got flogged because of their teaching of God's word. I'm sure that hurt...and yet they waltz out rejoicing! It shows that the apostles realized suffering for Jesus was a great honor. It seemed like a privilege to them. Afterall, Jesus chose them to represent him... and I think that is definitly worth celebrating!
Luke 4:21-22 - The council was afraid to punish Peter and John for fear of starting a riot...in essence it would have been a riot for Jesus, because everyone was praising God and didn't want these men punished. Nowadays our riots seem to be against Jesus.
I was horrified reading what happened to Stephan, I remember his fate from past knowledge but never did I expect it to happen right there as he was preaching all the truths that the people knew. He gave a great over view of the Old Testament... and he died because he continued to Jesus... it's hard to imagine much less really understand what that was like. Saul was there, condeming Stephan, little did he know what God had planned for him. *Tiff
The story of Stephen is amazing and I am challenged to focus on the glory of Jesus and the truth of God's faithfulnes as Stephen did in his final moments. If I fill my mind with the truth of who Jesus is and what he has done in the past and in my life, will I also be able to stand firm in the face of trouble or persecution?
I just really like when I read the psalms and so many of them are included in songs we sing on Sunday mornings. It makes it that much more cool when we are all singing Scripture together.
I noticed that there are some differences in what we believe. We now believe that everyone should hear about Jesus but these new Christians there thought that God's love for only for the Jews. It shows me how far we have come. Plus even though some thought that the others weren't afraid to tell everyone and anyone. Tamara
