  1. AS I concluded with reading the book of James this morning, I noted for the first time that the book does not conclude like many other letters in the Bible. All of Paul's letters that we have read have a greeting in the beginning and a "closing" at the end where he extends peace to his readers. James has a similar greeting in the beginning, but the book ends rather abruptly; almost as if some of his final words did not get included. I checked a commentary, but no mention is made whether this is a question of scholars regarding thoughts on the book of James.
James has long been a favorite book of mine. I memorized the entire book many years ago (although I couldn't recite it now without some practice). I like it because it is considered a book of action and practical living. It gives good advice for us as we seek to live upright lives.

  2. I had a thought on James 3. This chapter has a section on controlling the tongue. One verse talks about how sometimes the tongue praises God and sometimes it curses. In both of these instances words are coming out of the mouth, but what if no words come out of the mouth when some should? We may pat ourselves on the back when we stay away from negative talk or dirty jokes, but I wonder if saying nothing at times cab be as negative as cursing. How many times do I have the opportunity to encourage someone, to defend another person, to lift someone else up, or speak against injustices, but remain quiet? I have been afraid sometimes to open my mouth, whether it is to witness or defend another person, or even just or encourage, and I wonder what the other person will think. Beth Moore says, "Our words are potent no matter how we use them, but what would happen if we allowed God to take ahold of them?"
